Modern Calligraphy with Italic Capitals

Modern calligraphy is a very broad area and can leave the beginner or occasional calligrapher wondering where to start or how to expand your ideas. That new clean sheet of paper can be daunting.

This workshop will include basic lettering techniques of Italic capitals using a broad-edge nib and ink. Methods of starting a modern piece of calligraphy will be explored, as well as ways of making our mistakes work in our favour, helping you to discover your creative flow.

Designing a contemporary piece of calligraphic art can start in many ways. You need to let go of formal structures and let yourself discover your creative flow. There is always an opportunity to layer your work with mark making & mixed media. How to turn something unappealing into a work of art you can be proud of.

This workshop caters for beginners to intermediate calligraphers.

Cost: $100/pp, by Monday 20th November.

Calligraphy - Pointed Pen Uncial

This is a one day workshop suitable for beginners to calligraphy & intermediate students.

The Uncial script is based on early Greek lettering used in Christian manuscripts of the 4th century. In this workshop these roundhand Uncial letterforms are transformed into a modern Uncial script written with a flexible pointed nib. The thicks and thins of the letters are created by varied pressure on the split pointed nib. Beginners will receive step by step instruction, while intermediate calligraphers are given extended activities to work on. This light, flourished Uncial script is ideal for embellishing hand made cards, scrapbooking and modern calligraphic art.

A Modern Batarde - Cursive Gothic Script

Batarde is a cursive Gothic script derived from commonly used handwriting styles of the day in the 1300 – 1500’s throughout northern Europe. In the 15th & 16th centuries is became used as a formal script in personal Books of Hours commissioned by wealthy monks.

This Modern Batarde combines elements of formal Gothic scripts and the cursive fluency of Italics. It is a more forgiving script for the beginner to learn while challenging students to a more dexterous use of the chisel-edge nib.

Batarde is a versatile script suited to most calligraphy projects. This workshop is a great fit to follow on from the decorative initial letters, ‘Cadels’, held last month.

Beginners to intermediate students welcome.
